Bruce,
Your suggestion that you have each camera photograph the same smartphone, showing the current time (including seconds) would absolutely work. Although, you do not need them to all photograph the phone/clock at the same exact time. As long as they all photograph the same reference clock on the same day, the photos should all sync up perfectly. If I am sync'ing my own cameras in post, I have them all photograph the current time on the time.gov website, so that the photos from the different cameras with both be in sync with each other and also have accurate timestamps, since the clock that is photographed will also be accurate.

Hey Bruce!

I saw that you featured my tip on adjusting your camera's clocks at the start/end of Daylight Saving Time. I actually noticed this when you first published episode 198, and I enthusiastically showed the notes to my wife on my phone.

Anyway, I thought it might be worth mentioning a related issue: fixing the timestamp in post.

I've documented my process here:
http://www.pentaxforums.com/reviews/put-an-atomic-clock-in-your-camera/capture-time-matters.html

The same process could be used for fixing the timestamp on your photos, when you suddenly discover that you forgot to adjust your camera's clock at the DST change, and you've got thousands of photographs that are an hour off.

What I use it for most, is synchronizing the timestamps from multiple cameras, in post. Whether it's a wedding with multiple shooters, or just a simple portrait shoot with multiple cameras, sync'ing the clocks in post is a lot easier than trying to remember to do it at the start of the shoot. Plus, it allows you to fix the problem when you're actually sitting in front of your computer and faced with the problem.

Instead of regret and frustration, it's a two minute fix.

I know you are a Lightroom user, too. I hope you or one of your listeners finds the process useful.

Dear Bruce,
Good wishes for the forthcoming 200th Episode of the Shutters Inc Podcast.
One of my favourite podcasts, I particularly like that you represent the audience, at least it seems that you ask the sort of questions I have on my mind a lot of the time.
Congratulations! And here's to many more episodes to come.

Hi Bruce

The link I am referring to is the one on each ep "Feel free to make a small donation through PayPal.". It appears that the one on the right hand side works correctly.
As for the email address, see if your web guy can replace it with a form so that your email address is not revealed and add a captcha on to help block bots from using it.
I did send an email to that address, had been listening to the archive so didn't know better, will have to dig through my sent box and resend it... I do wonder how many legit email's get lost in that inbox.

Thanks for the podcasts, but hurry up and get the next one up ;) I have listened to the last ~50, not sure I am game enough to go back further ;)

Tony,
I just went to the site and clicked on the "Donate" link, and it loaded the Paypal page just fine.
What happened when you clicked on it?
As for the e-mail address, no, I'm not going to change that one.
That's there for the benefit of the spam bots.
Real people (like you) are always capable of finding the proper e-mail address on the tail end of the podcast! :)

Anyone notice that the PayPal link to donate just displays the image?
Bruce needs to get someone to update the site again cause also the email address on the contact-us page is out of date. Will have to listen to the tail end of a pod cast again to find the email address to drop the boys a line.

Under Fire is a good movie, as is Pecker. I own both DVDs.

Another photographer movie I'm looking forward to, being South African and having read the book, is The Bang Bang Club. See the trailer on YouTube at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DxLrdzvGQE4

I also was going to nit-pick about the movie reference, only because I was working at a movie theatre when Under Fire was new and that's why I remembered it. A funny thing about that movie... there's a scene in which Nolte speaks some Spanish and someone tells him his Spanish is great. But I spent some quality time in South America in the 1980s and, I'm sorry to say, I thought Nolte's Spanish in that scene was NOT impressive. And that made the movie kinda dumb.

I too was looking at Nick Nolte's IMDB page and not finding the movie title, eventually found Under Fire. Will have to check them both out.

I just spotted this and knowing how much of a Nikon lover Shelton is thought he might find it amusing - http://gizmodo.com/#!5766065/nikons-limited-edition-lens-box-another-reason-to-wish-you-were-swedish

Hey guys, good to hear your voices. I was looking for the movie you were talking about with Nick Nolte and Gene Hackman. I'm guessing you're getting two mixed up. Just wanted to share these. They are both about photographers.

Under Fire, 1983
Nick Nolte, Gene Hackman and Joanna Cassidy play journalists caught up in Nicaragua’s 1979 civil war.

"Watch here for Nolte’s authentic photojournalist. They must have hired a consultant for this one. The equipment is period and authentically beaten to a pulp. They even dubbed over the correct motor drive sound effect for the Nikon F2 he uses — as opposed to most films which feel the need to use a motor drive sound on a hand-wound camera. Nolte faces several ethical questions about taking sides in his work."

Then there's another one called "Salvador"
James Woods
James Belushi
Michael Murphy
John Savage

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0091886/

"A journalist, down on his luck in the US, drives to El Salvador to chronicle the events of the 1980 military dictatorship, including the assasination of Archbishop Oscar Romero. He forms an uneasy alliance with both guerillas in the countryside who want him to get pictures out to the US press, and the right-wing military, who want him to bring them photographs of the rebels. Meanwhile he has to find a way of protecting his Salvadorean girlfriend and getting her out of the country."

Just finished listening. I've been enjoying the podcasts because I kind of feel represented by Bruce's questions and journey.
Bruce, it's really nice to see you being acknowledged on a commercial level.
& a note of thanks to Shelton, too, making learning fun.
& thanks for making it ok to use lenses other than the best of the best. As you mentioned, not everyone has the budget but sometimes too, one is hesitant to use third party for the way they get reviewed and critisized to the nth degree. Horses for courses...for what most people do they might be great.

Isn't this the answer to the skier picture?

1) Drive the boat away from the sun.

2) Shoot skier with sunlight from behind, backlighted, and use a reflector (or two) in the boat to light the front of the skier from the cameras point of view.

3) Shutter speed to taste to stop action. Aperture for DOF, and ISO for what the shutter/aperture require.

Isn't that the easiest way?

Listened to the podcast on the NZ trip, as a participant I would like to say a BIG thank you to Shelton, Glynn Tash and Mike. Regardless of the weather I know everybody had a wonderful time, and took some great shots. They do however need to take responsibility for 10 people having huge withdrawals for several weeks. It was great looking forward to Mewannashootalotsamorewithouttherain
Cheers

At my place of work we have been using the Wacom 17" screens for a few years now and we will never go back although we still have the mouse attached. For Photoshop and illustrator it is fantastic , touching up photos and drawing masks and vectors is twice as fast as with a mouse. We work in 3D and sculpt with the tablets and a mouse doesn't come close. Although they are a bit expensive if you are serious about photography and your post processing then the screen is the only way to go as you can phisically touch the image on the screen and edit , it's the closest thing to old Darkroom techniques but with the smell of chemicals.

Oops.... adjustment layers into LIGHTROOM will result in Erin-death. They're already in Photoshop.

Great, great ep!

In all seriousness, a tablet and stylus are a brilliant addition to your repertoire while doing post work on photos. It certainly doesn't need to be one or the other - I use both tablet and mouse in tandem on just about all my creative 'manips and even photo retouching and after the initial learning curve (which is sharp but not nasty) you won't look back at all. Come on, Shel, I turned from the dark side (Pentax) to Nikon - learn to use a tablet. :)

The best thing about tablets is for the reason that Bruce said - you have the control to build up an effect. It's brilliant.

Can I suggest a tip, Bruce? Learn some of the keyboard shortcuts for some of your most common actions for which you go digging through menus in whatever application you use, specifically Photoshop. It helps you to stop reaching for the mouse so much and you can utilise both hands a little more to save on the RSI.

(Please note, nothing will prevent RSI if you spend as much time on the computer as I do. Oy. And ouch!)

OK. Will shut up now, except to say that I sooo want that Intuos Wacom. Seriously need an upgrade to my eons-old Graphire, it's starting to show it's age. How about a retouch competition detailing precisely how you did what you (we) did? Post before/after shots on Shutters Inc flickr group? I promise, hand on heart, to do everything with a mouse.

Ok... NOW I shut up.

PS... The day they introduce adjustment layers into Photoshop is the day that Erin throws herself off something very, very, VERY high.

Just listening to the podcast and I thought I would add some details on the umbrella shoot with Richard.
Glynn taped a flash into a black studio umbrella with a silver lining and then had Richard angle the umbrella so that the light was reflected back towards his face and hiding the silver lining from view.

My settings for the umbrella shots were ISO 400, f16, 1/100 which seemed to work quite well

The a850 (and a900) will automatically crop DT lenses like the 18-70, 18-200, etc when you attach them. The APS-C mode in the menu is a manual option to use crop mode on full frame lenses or for third party APS lenses which may not automatically select crop mode. The 75-300 you have is a full frame lens and thusly will not crop.

Unfortunately, you can't turn the automatic APS mode off for those DT lenses that automatically set it (which would be Minolta/Sony official DT lenses).

Also, what RAW converter do you use? You may want to consider DxO or CaptureOne instead of ACR/Lightroom for better noise performance.

Also, the camera that did the auto AF point detection based on eye position was the Canon EOS 3 and ELAN 7n. From what I can remember, it didn't work very well.

http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=CanonAdvantageTopicDtlAct&fcategoryid=111&id=2649

The DRO options on the a850 actually work very much like Joe was imagining for adjusting area-specific contrast and range. It requires dedicated hardware in the camera and relies a lot on the special meters in the camera, but it does work pretty well. The a550 has a neat auto HDR mode that works surprisingly well to reduce noise as opposed to making bizarro images...

Ciao.

Rebecca,
The problem was caused by the incredible demand for episode 144 of Shutters Inc.
Now that that demand has been satisfied, services should have pretty much returned to normal.
Let me know if you're still having problems.

Carl,
Are you sure you listened to the right episode???
How could you have missed Joe McNally?
Have you heard the whole episode, or did you only get half a download?
Just out of interest, what is the duration of YOUR episode #144?

Dave,
That is a most extraordinary generous offer.
Thank you so much.
As we sail today, I will e-mail the winners and advise whichever of them didn't receive a Speed Strap ('cause I don't recall who got what!) to get in touch with you direct.
Cheers!

Have a happy Christmas guys and thanks for the great podcasts to date.

I will echo Philip's comment, that I am trying to catch up with Sine Language and will use the remainder of the year to do so -- so we all can start with a clean slate come January.

Within the last week I heard and read your tips on field recording. While I have been practicing the recording and interviewing techniques you note, I haven't had a good procedure for processing the recordings. Today I tried your limiter and compression sequence and was very satisfied with the result. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

May you find some time to relax during the holidays. Best wishes.

Hi Bruce really enjoyed this podcast, not that the others weren't great but this one was different. I like the idea of hearing from people that we wouldn't get access to. Guess we are lucky having the people in melbourne that we do (eg. Shelton)
Hope you pan to do more of these guest spots occasionally in the future. I liked Claudia's take on lighting and her comments from a movie background. Thanks for your efforts. PS. did I detect a bit of nervousness at the start. Great job.

Bomar,
Don't worry, I ain't leavin' yet!! :)
As for artwork and metadata being displayed on playback, that depends a lot on what software you use for playback. I use <a href="http://www.mediamonkey.com" rel="nofollow">Media Monkey</a>, which can alter it's artwork display state between "current selection" or "now playing".
But maybe that's a story for another day.
In terms of ADDING the artwork, iToons will allow you to browse for an image, as will Media Monkey, and I'd imagine so would most other media players.
As for editing the metadata, again, any decent media management utility (iToons, MM, etc) should give you access to the various fields.
The thing I like about Media Monkey is that you can select a whole bunch of files and aplpy the same field of metadata to all of those files in one go.
There's not a lot you can't do in Media Monkey when it comes to ID3 tag editing, but when you need to do something MM CAN'T handle, that's when you reach for the Swiss Army Knife of ID3 tag editors... the little-known, totally-indispenbile <a href="http://www.magnusbrading.com" rel="nofollow">MP3 Tag Studio</a>.
What MP3TS can't do with an ID3 tag ain't worth doin'. :)
It's awesome.
It's freeware (with a banner graphic), but for US$19, you get a license which will give you lifetime upgrades. Best twenty bucks I EVER spent. Bar none.
Will do my best to include this topic in the next ep of Sine Language.
Cheers.

Hey Bruce

Before you completely switch to photography and forget about us audio freaks I just wanted to chime in and ask (if it has not been covered before) the best way to prepare and add art work and metadata so that whenever the song is played the artwork is displayed properly and how to avoid pifalls such as the chipmunk effect (never encoding above 44100 and etc)

Second topic

You may be interested in the way sound looks in real life more specifically a technique used to photograph shockwaves

http://www.americanscientist.org/issues/feature/high-speed-imaging-of-shock-waves-explosions-and-gunshots/1

well that is it, if the artwork and metadata has been covered before could you please tell me what number on BTP or SL?

keep up te art!

This was a great episode. The interview was great! Being a big fan of Babylon 5, I couldn't believe my ears when I heard Claudia. It just put a big smile on my face. But of course the content was great as well, I'll definetly check out Dave's DVDs.

Also THANK YOU so very much for your introductory remarks about your tests with your KonikaMinolta and the new Sony.
I recently got an old Nikon D70 for, what we in germany call , "an apple and an egg" (around 100us$). And since it's obviously older gear, you made me really nervous for one minute, when you said how you saw this huge diffrence on the screen, and a big sigh of relief when the biggest diffrence really was the screens.
That gave me hope I can achieve my vision with just enough practice. In the end it's really only about the photographer (and the lenses :-) )and not so much the gear. You saved me from GAS ;-), because it's just me that has to improve.

And having listened to shutters inc gives me a great headstart. Even before owning an DSLR I got the feeling the way I look at things has changed. So thanks again.

Cheers, Jan

I believe the Brightness and Contrast setting you mentioned in Lightroom are the defaults. To change that for all future imports open a photo in the develop module, set the settings you want to always start with, then choose "Set Default Settings..." in the Develop menu and choose "Update to Current Settings". It won't change anything already in your catalog but all imported photos from then on will have those settings to start.

I use this because I only shoot B&W, so I set Lightroom to open everything with my basic greyscale settings. I also set B&W on my D700's display, so I only ever see color if I need to reference it in raw for adjustments.

Great interview Bruce
I am sure a lot of people will gain a lot of confidence about their own photography and know that they too can get out and try these types of shots. As David says, he only shoots on manual and guesses (from experience) a lot of his lighting set ups. Practice seems to be the key word.

Nice work Bruce, loved the podcast. I like the idea of having a different guest on a semi regular basis. Maybe we can have a poll to see who you (and Shelton) can talk to first?

I would love to hear from Joe McNally and I think it would be interesting hearing how David Oliver's semi recent transition from shooting all his weddings with film to shooting digitally has changed his work flow and shooting style.

Feel free to send the dvd's on down, I will put them to good use ;)

I guess this means the 7D would be a Very useful backup when shooting a wedding - used in tandem rather than an emergency only option. The question now is which lens to put on which camera! Always a sweet moment when your own gear turns out to be a bit better than what you thought. This doesn't mean you're getting out of buying the A850 though...not by a long chalk, buddy. Read an interesting article the other day..."Is the camera gear you desire the gear you already own?" Hmmmm...

Interesting experience you made. I'm to considering an upgrade to the alpha 900 (owning an a350) and honestly speaking image quality was not a reason for the change.

I must say that your results surprise me, but they don't effect any of my reasons for an upgrade. The reasons for selecting a new camera were ergonomics, ability for tethered shooting, more configuration for exposure bracketing, full frame (been a but 35mm shooter for more than 25 years, and I do miss the full frame a lot, that's just me, I don't think that full frame is generally better than crop sensors). For me it wasn't a matter of comparing data sheets, these are the requirements caused by my kind of photography.

No, they didn't.... but, I now have a very interesting story to tell on this front.
Shelton and I are hoping to record tonight (Monday) before he leaves for India. If that happens, we will discuss what I have learned.
Wink wink nudge nudge say no more.

One thing people often get confused about with respect to Creative Commons is that it is not about copyright. It is about licensing. If you license under CC you still retain the copyright to the image, all you've done is give terms under which people can use your image. If someone uses you image in a way that is not violates the CC license, you can take legal action against them because you hold the copyright.

I recommend checking out the Photo Legal podcast. It's UK based, but has good info.

I would be interested, especially because with other people selling desktop wallpapers (e.g: digitalblasphemy.com) though, not quite the same business model your panoramas may actually be very interesting as printed or desktop wallpapers.
just a though

Hi guys - just wanted to let you know that the guy you need to talk to about Creative Commons is probably Tama Leaver. He's a uni teacher over in Perth and I've been following him for ages. He's the big CC advocate that I know of and actually teaches on the subject.

Not to mention Miss Lash...oh, it's Tash, I beg your pardon. The "It vill be done MY Vay" thing confused me.

I thought it was good that you left in the dinner sounds etc. It gave us an idea of the atmosphere of the comaraderie on weekend.

I have used an iRiver mp3 player that allows you to connect an external lapel mic via 1/8" Jack. Sounds good. The only thing is noises from moving around. Maybe a mic that attaches to the ear.

Hey Mark!
Its Moe here. :-)
I drink Jack Daniels when its free.
Otherwise, I don't really go for Bourbon at all. I prefer Scotch...pure Malt, at least 12 years old and preferably an Islay. LaPhroag comes to mind...

Hey,Bruce, nice work on that panorama. Can't wait to see your shots when you get the Alpha 850. I also thought you showed admirable restraint when Larry, Moe and Curly hijacked the podcast! Can't believe Shelton drinks Jack Daniel's. A TRUE CANUCK only drinks Canadian Club.
