Episode 418 – OMG, You’re Glynn Lavender!

This week Glynn regales us with stories from the U.S. east coast.
He’s also interested in checking out Skylum Luminar, which appears to be another good Photoshop option for those looking to move away from Adobe’s ever-increasing monthly subscriptions.
I mentioned that he should also have a look at Serif’s AffinityPhoto.

He also came across Dubble, which is film (yes, REAL film!) with colour anomalies deliberately included. Something a bit different!

And following on in the vein of his Yashica Y35, there’s also Pixii; a range-finder-style camera, which utilises Leica lenses, and allows you to see the images instantly on your connected mobile device.

And DJI has hit back against the purveyors of the video we linked to last week (about the crash-testing of drones into small aircraft, and what damage might result from such a collision).

Following on with the theme of Adobe-alternatives, I came across Photopea, which is a browser-based free web app, which allows you to create, edit and save multi-layer image documents (.psd for photoshop, .xcf for gimp), with all the usual goodies you’d expect… layers, blend modes, masks, opacity control, etc.
Sure, it’s not the same as actually HAVING Photoshop, but if you’re on the road, and need some quick Photoshop-like heavy lifting, it might just get you out of a pinch!

David Marland sent us an epic letter about the decisions made at Kodak and Fujifilm, when the industry was in a period of upheaval (what millenials would refer to as “disruption”).
The article he referred to can be found on petapixel.

Adam sent us the story about the guy who rented out his gear through KitSplit, only to have some mongrel disappear into the sunset with $4500 worth of gear!

And there was the guy who turned an entire HOUSE into a camera body!

I have been a professional audio engineer since the mid 80's and am happy to do for free in my spare time what I get paid to do during the week. I created Shutters Inc in May 2005, and it is today (as best as I can tell) THE longest-running photography podcast in the world.

Hi Bruce & Glynn, Another interesting podcast and particularly hearing about Glynn’s tip re Uber Pool in NY as we are going to be there later this month.
I will also look forward to hearing your comparison b/n Luminar & Affinity Photo.
I purchased Luminar last Nov 2017 and was getting to grips with it until they released an upgrade in April 2018. This upgrade does not work on my windows Toshiba laptop (which is 3 yrs old). When trying to open Luminar, an error is displayed “OpenGL 3.3 and later is required for this application to run. Try updating your graphics drivers.”
Toshiba say there isn’t a newer graphics driver so I’m prevented from using the new upgrades as are many other users with older machines. Unfortunately, when I’ve contacted Skylum, they really are not interested in sorting out this issue for many users.
Good luck testing and I wish the upgrades worked for me as it is a great piece of s/w which does seem to do most of what Lightroom does.

OMG – Can we afford Glynn Lavender!?
Glynn’s rubbing shoulders with the Tamron hierarchy while scoffing $60 steaks and sharing a $250 seafood platter is one thing. But when another prominent star of the US camera world reels back and says “Not THE Glynn Lavender?” it begs the question – can we still expect him to appear for nothing on the World’s Best Loved Photography Podcast?
I hope so. Dispensing 16 minutes of good advice across four-hundred-and-odd hours of podcasts is not to be sneezed at and Bruce, you’ll be hard pressed to find someone else who can equal that feat, I’m sure.
But meanwhile, I’ll tune in next week with fingers crossed.
    Keepupthegoodwork.
