Episode 515 – Just what is a portrait anyway?

This week, Tamron releases 2 cracking new e-mount lenses. The 2nd gen 28-75/2.8, and the 35-150/2-2.8 (the world’s first mirrorless zoom lens with a maximum aperture of f2).

Check out this slo-mo video of vintage lightbulbs firing!

Paul sent us a few stories, including the one of the Chicago couple who bought they did the right thing buying from a bricks-and-mortar store, only to find they ended up with a warranty-free “grey market” camera.

Jeff Cable is (at the time of writing) in Tokyo covering the some sporting event or other. His blog has some stories about his workflow, plus this one about shooting some slow-shutter panning shots of the equestrian eventing.

Then, we get into a spirited discussion about the (Australian) National Photographic Portrait Prize winner for 2021. We both agree on the value of the image, but have differing views on its appropriateness as a “portrait”.

If lockdown has you ignoring your camera, maybe have a crack at some bird photography from your window.

Alternatively, make the most of some gadgets and tools lying around your house to do something creative.

And finally, a story about shooting a cyclist in a tunnel.

I have been a professional audio engineer since the mid 80's and am happy to do for free in my spare time what I get paid to do during the week. I created Shutters Inc in May 2005, and it is today (as best as I can tell) THE longest-running photography podcast in the world.
